Two Interesting Flea Markets

What kind of images do you bring when you think of a flea market? I'm quite sure that many people might think a flea market just as an outdoor market selling used and old, and kind of dirty goods. But nowadays, many flea markets are changing to a place of attraction for many young people.

Flea markets have been held in a large field outside commonly. But they are moving to a much smaller indoor space, which helps them to be held regularly in spite of the rain or strong wind. And also they are becoming a party rather than market itself. There are two popular flea markets. One is a flea market called 'Bling Platoon Night Flea Market' and the other is called '500 flea market'. Both of them are held indoor but they are widely dissimilar in the mood. In the first one 'Bling Platoon Night Flea Market', there is live background music by DJ. And also there is a bar selling some simple snacks and drinks. Furthermore, there are some exhibitions and funny displays from new artists. And some musicians are doing small music concerts or performances in the middle or end of the market. But in the other one '500 flea market', people might feel as though they are in India or Thailand or even jjimjilbang – Korean dry sauna. This market sometimes holds an arm-wrestling competition and does exorcism, Korean ritual performance wishing being good luck. Such activities are not too popular nowadays, but it makes it all the more significant because they are part of our tradition. And there is a space for selling many kinds of Korean traditional food such as pajeon – Korean vegetable pancake, and makgeolli – Korean rice wine. But they are flea markets, so they are originally held for selling used goods. But the goods are not just used and old. Almost all of them are reformed and decorated by creative sellers. And also many foreigners are participating in the market and selling the goods from their own countries. So people can encounter very unique and special goods. And the boundary of goods is not limited to clothing or accessories just for fashion. There are many books or CDs which have a much value of possession. And for example, there is a stall selling photo albums which are collected from the seller's numerous traveling around the world. And what's better is all goods are sold at very reasonable prices. Whether they are reformed or not, it's a flea market! So with just 10,000won, people can buy two or three items.

Flea markets are becoming a place where people can go with their friends for an interesting experience over weekend. The first one that I introduced is in more contemporary mood and the other is in more traditional and quite mysterious mood. Add to enjoying the moods, people could get unique and special goods at the very reasonable prices in flea markets as well.
