The Best Health Food: Broiled Eels

When you are exhausted, you need a health food which supplements your stamina, especially in summer. Because summer is extremely hot and humid in Korea, People are easily fatigued so most Korean eat health foods in summer, such as Sam-gye-tang, Bo-sin-tang, broiled eels. Among those health foods, my favorite food is Broiled eels. Broiled eels are not only good for health but the smell is aromatic and the flavor is fantastic. When I was exhausted, broiled eels made me strong, just like Popeye eating spinach.

Actually, I didn't like health foods because the flavor of almost health foods was awful for me. However, when I was preparing the college entrance exam, I was exhausted in summer because the weather was very hot and I had to do study all day.  One day, my father said, "You look very tired.  You need a stamina food. Let's go to the broiled eels restaurant."  He brought me to the sea food restaurant and we ate the broiled eels. The broiled eels were roasted on the grill and the smell of roasting eels was aromatic. The smell made me very hungry and I wanted to eat the food as soon as possible. But the eels have to be roasted slowly, so we waited patiently. Eventually, the eels were roasted well and I enjoyed the food.  The flavor of broiled eels got rid of my prejudice that the taste of all the health food is awful.  The more I chewed, the more flavor I got. I devoured all the pieces of meat in a moment. After eating the broiled eel, I immediately felt I was much stronger and could overcome fatigue. Thanks to the broiled eel, I could study hard again.

After that, when I was fatigue and exhausted, I ate broiled eels. An eel is rich in vitamin A,B,C and protein so it is good for skin beauty and relieving fatigue. I highly recommend you to eat broiled eels when you are fatigue and exhausted.

Chocolate chip cookies- the best in the world

Do you know the character Cookie-monster at a TV program called Sesame street? He is a blue monster that eats all kinds of chocolate chips. I think I am a cookie monster too. I love to eat cookies, I can eat them every day. And sometimes I can't stop my self even though that I know I will get sick. I don't have a sweet tooth, but the most thing that I love is chocolate chip cookie, especially home-made ones.

Chocolate chip cookies are every where, and there are so many kinds of them to try. But to me, my mom's cookies are the best. She started to make them since I was six years old. Her cookies are quite big, as big as my palm. But it is very soft and smells really good. She uses various kinds of toppings. When I was young, she used M&M which were big as some beans and had lots of colors like red, blue, yellow, green and others. As I grew up, instead of M&M; although she uses sometimes, now she uses different flavors of chocolates, like dark chocolates, milk chocolates, white chocolates or strawberry, mint, orange and many other things that are able to use. When it is baked in the oven, the smell of the cookies is all around the house, very strongly and sweet. But my best part is when it comes right out of the oven. They are very hot so its difficult to hold it, they are brown and chocolate chunks at the cover are little bit melted. I take one in my hand, and have a bite. The sweet smell comes into my nose, and at the same time the taste rushes to my tongue. It is very chewy and the chocolate melts down. It is the best time ever!

For my life I had tasted lots of kinds of chocolate chip cookies. They are also delicious and sometimes I love to buy them. But yet I couldn't find a cookie that makes me happy than my mother's. Still to me, my mother's cookies are the best.

The food that I dislike the most

I enjoy eating almost all kinds of food, but there is one exception, Japanese food. For example of typical Japanese food, Sushi and slices of raw fish (Korean call it, Hwe). Even though Japanese food has been very popular in Korea, I strongly dislike those kinds of dishes. There are two reasons for this. One thing is related with the experience that I had before, another is my personal thought about taste of Japanese food.

First, I have bad experience of eating Japanese food, especially slices of raw fish. When I was 10 years old, I went to the coast city, Sokcho, which is famous for its fresh fish and plenty of sea food. So my family went to a restaurant for eating sliced raw fish near my uncle's house and a problem happened there. That was my first time of eating sliced raw fish, so I ate the food without any hesitation. However, after having that meal, I got sick badly, even I went to the hospital. I threw up all the things that I ate and have to stay in the bed for whole day. That bad experience of Japanese sliced raw fish was stamped on my memory for long time. After that, I have a tendency to avoid that kind of food. The second reason is that my own taste for food. I prefer to eat spicy or salty food, but I think Japanese food does not have pungent flavor, they just have weak or flat flavor. You may not understand without this example, Korean ramen and Japanese ramen. I tasted both, and found some difference between them. I think Korean ramen have more spicy and pungent flavor that attracts me to eat it. Meanwhile, Japanese ramen tasted like just a little salty and oily soup, so I really disliked eating it.

However, I do not hate all kinds of Japanese food. I enjoy few kinds of Japanese food that are differently cooked for being suited to Korean's appetite. Sometimes, I go out to eat Japanese Curry, Tonkatsu or Donburi. Of course I know that eating only what I like is a bad habit, and some of the Japanese food are good for health, so I try hard to eat them as much as possible.

I love cream spaghetti

Last summer, I went to Busan, my hometown. One day, my elder sister took our family to a very small restaurant in front of her university. The restaurant was hard to find, with no noticeable signboard, so even my sister had spend some time looking for it. The restaurant was a specialty store for an Italian food, especially spaghetti. Since it wasn't a nationwide chain restaurant like Outback, I had doubts about the quality of food there. But the cream spaghetti this particular restaurant made changed my impression of it forever.

The "cream spaghetti" had not been in my mind, in fact, I actually disliked it. To me, cream spaghetti tasted just too milky and oily, and it felt like I was always eating more pickles than the dish itself. So when I saw the menu, I was very unhappy because all were cream, cream and just cream. But the moment I put the spaghetti into my mouth, I could feel it melting in my mouth. The cream spaghetti at this small and mysterious restaurant in Busan was just perfect. Each strand of spaghetti was boiled just to the right amount of chewiness and the sauce was thick and creamy, but yet did not leave an unpleasant lingering taste. I just couldn't put my fork down. I devoured the entire plate.

I have only been to this Italian restaurant once but since that day, I have come to love cream spaghetti. However, I still haven't found a restaurant that makes better spaghetti than this place. I don't have much chance to go to Busan for my favorite spaghetti but I am always looking forward to having it again for my dinner soon.

Curry is the best food for me now. Actually, I didn't like curry when I was young. Without tasting curry, I hated it because of its characteristic smell and color. Spice of curry smelled too strong for me to hold my nose and yellow color of it spoiled my appetite. Because of these reasons, I didn't even try curry.

One day, when my mother cooked curry, I made complaint about the food. But in order to letting me stop complaining about food, my mother told me that if I take a bite of rice with curry, she will buy a hamburger that I like. So I ate just one little bite holding my nose. Before I eat curry, I thought it's taste is very awful like its smell and color. But I was wrong. Curry doesn't have the favor that I have imagined until now. Apart from the smell and the color that spoil appetite, curry has rich and dark flavor. It is not only sweet and but also hot. So hot taste makes curry not too greasy. I couldn't help but eat curry after that day. I usually enjoy curry adding meat, potato, carrot and broccoli to it. They are chewed softly in mouth mixed with curry sauce. According to personal taste, many kinds of ingredients can be added to curry. This is similar to topping in pizza!

Now, I love even smell of curry because I know how great it tastes. So I regret that I didn't have curry in the past. If there is curry, I can have even two bowls of rice. From when I ate curry for the first time, I try not to have prejudice against food. I think that likes and dislikes about food cannot be decided without trying it. It is the most important to eat the food first when you decide your tastes in food. Try the food first before you complain about it!

Boiled Beef, "Shabu-Shabu"

When asked "what is your favorite food?" I had always hesitated to answer. However, ever since I ate the dish called Shabu shabu, my answer has always been quick and easy: It's SHABU SHABU! Now, if you are from western side of the world, you might wonder what on earth is 'Shabu shabu'. It is a healthy Japanese dish made of a variety of ingredients but mainly thinly sliced meat, sirloin and different fresh vegetables. Due to the well-being syndrome in Korea nowadays, Shabu shabu became very popular all over Korea and Asia. Yet, Shabu shabu with mulberry leaves has unbelievable taste that you would definitely want to try in your lifetime. It is served in a restaurant located in Sin Chon, Seoul.

One of my best friends who lives in Sin Chon once took me to the restaurant near her house. I got into the place and sat at the strong but comfortable wooden table. I liked the atmosphere and soon the food was served. Some side dishes were served first then a big hot pot was put in the very center of the table. Then, reddish fresh meat that was thinly sliced was brought in on a big dish together with green fresh vegetables of different kinds.  Among many kinds, mulberry leaves were clearly distinguished. Mulberry leaves' clean scent was simmered to prepare stock, making Shabu shabu taste fresh. In the boiling stock with angry bubbles on its surface, I soaked ingredients and after a while I dipped them into a little spicy sauce. Then I put them into my mouth. As I chewed, tender meat and vegetables were mixed with juicy sauce. After eating all the sirloin and vegetables, greenish noodle made of mulberry leaves were served. After the noodle was cooked in the boiling stock, I took a few strands of noodles. They were not too soft but a bit chewy. Seasoned with mulberry leaves' smell, the noodle had clean taste. This was not all. The rice with neatly chopped vegetables was cooked with the left stock. A small raw egg was added. After mixing it evenly, I have got rice porridge. Though my stomach was already full with the boiled beef and vegetables and noodle, rice porridge was so yummy that I could not stop eating. Shabu shabu seems not enough at the beginning. Afterwards, however, you would want to finish the last grain of rice even though you know your stomach is about to burst.

There is no doubt that nothing can replace Shabu shabu as my favorite food. Although the type of Shabu shabu can differ depending on the ingredients and they sure taste good, I just fall for Shabu shabu with mulberry leaves. Thus, I'd like to say that this is the dish you should try at any cost.

The best kimchi I ever had

There is a unique food in Korea that you will never forget the taste of it at the first bite. It's called 'Kimchi'. 'Kimchi' is the most basic food in Korean's table and so it has many different recipes. But the most delicious kimchi I ever had was the one that my grandmother made.

It was a cold but sunny winter in Korea. I came back from Brasil, where I lived for about 5 years. My grandmother lived in an apartment and there she ripen the kimchi at the hallway, outside of the house. Kimchi is often put into a huge crock and buried in the ground for ripening and storage. However as there was no place to bury the crock at the apartment, my grandmother just put it in a styrofoam box. When I went to visit her, she showed me the kimchi that was in the crock. It was covered with thin ice because of the cold weather and was yellow and red which it meant it was ripen for a long time. My grandmother told me it was kimchi. She ripped a part and gave it to me. I still remember the marvelous taste of that first kimchi I ever had. I put it in my mouth. At first it was so freezing that I thought I was eating ice. But right after that the sour and spicy sauce of the kimchi came out and I could chew the crunchy frozen salted cabbage. It was so delicious!  The right amount of spicy taste, the mouth watering sourness and the frozen cabbage made a perfect kimchi.

After eating that kimchi, I ate kimchi almost everytime I had meals. But there was no kimchi as tasty as that kimchi I had when I was 10 years old. Even my grandmother's kimchi doesn't taste like the one that I had 11 years ago. I still like kimchi very much and enjoy eating various kinds of it, but I wish I could eat the kimchi of my memory once again. It was the best kimchi I ever had!

Last year, there was a time that I was very depressed and blue. I don't no why, but it was like some kind of slump. One day, I went to my aunt's house and I found a book on the shelve. That book was "Life Lessons", and from the title of it, it caught my eyes. It was the stories about people who faces the death to come. The author interviewed them and each one has different story and gives us different life lessons. 'Being yourself', 'Don't travel without love', 'Don't live as person who is not dead yet', 'Forgiveness', 'For a heartbeating life', etc.. It has a lot of heartwarming stories. The more I read it the more I learn lessons and something changes in my mind. I no longer feel depressed or blue and become optimistic. That book gave me another point of view. I still feel blue sometimes. But whenever I feel depressed or blue again, I remind that book and the lessons it gave me. And if someone look depressed, I recommend them to read this book.

Cars are used most often in modern society, following on public transportations.
On the other hand, as modern people become more busy, bicycles are likely to be less used in these days, I think.
What I'd like to say is : Riding a bicycle enables me to think more deeply and refresh myself.
A few weeks ago, I received a bicycle from my friend. I haven't riden it since 2003.
I stumbled and fell down many times at first. But I could get the feel of it soon.
On that day, I rode the bicycle for a hour from Jam-sil to Seong-su, my town.
It took more time and made me more exhausted than cars or public transportations, of course.
But I could feel lots of new things that I wouldn't see in the past.
While I rode along Han river, I felt real freedom and I could forget difficulties in life for a minute. In addition, as I went through new ways, I felt as if I would be a pioneer.
Whispering breeze brought me a peaceful world. That is, riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to change my moods.

Write a paragraph about something great.

Doing exercises is great for a person. One of my best friends and I started practicing Yoga from last Monday, September 6th. I decided to do Yoga only for losing weight. I did it just for four days, but I felt something changed in my body and my mind. Actually I had suffered from sleeplessness during the whole summer vacation, so my body, especially my complexion was really bad and I was always tired. And I couldn't feel relieved. Sometimes I even didn't know what I was thinking about. However, after doing Yoga for a few days, I can have a good night. Of course my skin's condition is better now, and I feel relaxed, so I can concentrate more on my everyday school life. Actually I am completely absorbed in doing exercises these days. I occasionally play Badminton and Table Tennis as well. I thought that I would be more tired after working up a sweat. But it's not true. Working out hard is really helping me be lively to everything.

 My Favorite Horror Movie

Before I watched this movie, I had prejudice about horror film and I didn't like those types of movie. But after I watched "A Tale of Two Sisters", I changed my mind completely. Actually when I saw the movie as a child first, I couldn't understand the whole story because the contents of the movie was a little complicated. But when I saw the movie for second time, great impressions from the movie lingered in my mind. This film is an adaptation of korean traditional fairy tale. And the story of the movie is about the family that has father, stepmother and two sister. One day, father came to home with his new wife. and the tragedy started. This movie provides viewers with not only visual fear but also psychological fear. It means that the movie is full of mysterious mood and suspense without scary ghost and cruel scene. Most of the horror films tend to surprise people by showing unnecessary cruel scene but not to have a solid story line. But this movie has a great ending and also has dramatic reversal. I saw a lot of horror movie until now, but I still regard that "A Tale of Two Sisters" is the best horror film I've ever seen. So I strongly recommend this movie to all of you.

Traveling

Traveling to somewhere, especially to foreign countries, is really great thing for me. There’s also old saying: The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page. Last summer, I traveled to West Europe, visited England, France, Germany, Switzerland and Italy. The trip to West Europe is one of my greatest things I’ve ever experienced for some reasons.

First, I could feel diverse cultures, eat foods of each country and see places with many historical associations. It was amazing that I could see real constructions just as I had only seen in books. Second, I could meet various people from different countries who have much more open-minded than I expected. In England, I met an old man from Holland. Suddenly, he asked me that I was a traveler and we continued to talk. Because of my first major, department of Dutch, I was very interested with his words related to Netherland. I also surprised at his attitudes towards an eastern stranger like me. He enjoyed talking with me without any prejudice. The last thing is about courage. Before the trip, I was worried about how to cope with unpredictable events that I would face during the trip because I was a kind of coward person. However, when I faced difficulties such as losing ways, running out of money, I became a brave person and could solve many problems by myself.

For those reasons, I can say that traveling is the greatest thing to me, not only traveling to West Europe, but also to other countries.

Clothes

Every one wears clothes. We can't live with out them. So they are very important to our lives. But it is also a very common thing so some people do not pay much attention to it. To me, the greatest thing in my life is my clothes. It is one of the things that I can express my self. I can show the day's mood; like when I don't feel so good, I can wear some dark-colored clothes. And I can show my personality by not following other peoples' dressing, but wearing how I want.

Also there are various kinds of clothes in the world. There are so many things to pick, can not wear them all for your rest of your life! When I go to a shopping mall, even though I don't buy them, just looking around some shops makes me exciting. There are so many things to look.

Clothes also keep memories. My mother has a hand-made sweater. It was a first gift from her mother when she was 10 years old. More than 30 years have passed, but she's still keeping that sweater. She said because it reminds of her childhood so can't throw it away.

Like these, clothes have special meanings to me. I'm not a best dresser and don't have lot's of them, but to me, they are very special.

Writing about something great

Movie is one of the greatest things in the world. Everything that people imagine can become a reality and it enables other people to see those things that they couldn't imagine. It makes nonrealistic things to seem real like toys talking, robots coexisting with humans, high technology machines that don't exist at this point appearing and so on. The movie "Inception" for example, is a hard movie to understand. However the idea is really fascinating that human dream has 3 layers and it can be controlled by other people besides the dreamer. I knew we could dream in a dream but influencing another people by going into a dream is something I never imagined about! Also films are like a packet full of all kinds of cutting edge technologies.

Film makers use chromakey to edit two or more images together, computer graphics to make fictitious characters real, 3D technology to help us feel the images moving right in front of our eyes vividly ect. Have you ever seen a street rolling up to the sky and everything moving the same way as it does in normal street without falling? In the movies it is possible thanks to the developed technologies. Even more unbelievable things can happen in it and it really amuses me.

my writing is quite long

but hope it's not too boring to read :)

When I was looking at the list of courses I might want to take, one name caught my eyes- Jon H. Bahk. Because there is a famous good-looking star featuring in a Korean TV program whose name is John Park. I wanted to take English writing class for the first place and the appealing(?) name helped me finalize my decision.

It was the first day of the crourse. Everybody was quiet and seemed quite nervous including myself. The professor with a catchy name was there in front of the class. He wasn't tall. He had gray hair. He didn't look too young. He had a cute potbelly. Most importantly, though, he looked professional with his glasses. I was excited and waited for him to speak out a word. And he did. He gave a full presentation about the course. Then I thought to myself,

'Wow….. this IS going to be a tough class. I better get scholarship this semester, but with this course….hm…. maybe I should reconsider about taking the course.'

While I was busy worrying, the new slide popped up on the screen. It was a picture of cute, nice looking little boy and another picture of a woman in black and white next to it. The professor started to talk about his personal life- his family. As he was talking about his family members, I could see him in different perspective. He looked much friendlier and had brighter speech tone. He referred to his family as "life."

"Work is work and life is life,"

he added. The way how he introduced his family to the class was quite touching. Though it seemed quite normal, I was moved. I think it's because I recently had a family problem. Watching the professor talking about his family, I came to think how important it is to love and care about family. In fact, I realized how beautiful it is. I believe the only blood-sharing people in the world are not something we get for granted. In other words, we should realize the value of family and appreciate for parental love, not taking them for granted.
