Bad Influence of Television on Children

Today, millions of people have at least one babo sangja- "a fool box" in Korean. Can you guess what I meant by babo sangja? Yes, it is a cubic device used as a medium of telecommunication and one of the best inventions ever in the history of human beings- TELEVISION! It would be difficult for modern people to imagine their lives without TV as it is deeply seeped into their daily lives. However, this wonderful "box" is negatively influencing children for many reasons. Television is harmful for children in terms of education and growth.

Unlike in the past, a great number of children are watching TV these days. Yet, broadcasting companies are not paying enough attention to young targets. There is no strict regulation or control of children watching programs that are for adults. Violence, sexuality, race and gender stereotype, drug and alcohol abuse are common themes of television programs. Since children are not fully developed and therefore vulnerable, they are likely to accept everything they see and hear. Children who see violent action movies or dramas, for instance, might become aggressive, behaving exactly the same in their group. Kids who see many programs where adults speak inappropriate languages might immitate them in their real lives. In addition to bad influence on their development, kids' health deteriorates by watching TV for so long. The Campagin for Korea's Kids conducted a survey and found that Korean children watch an average of three to four hours of television on a daily basis. Watching TV does not require either physical exercise. Thus, children who just sit for hours and hours watching TV instead of hanging out with their friends outside have greater chances to become obese or harm their eyes. One recent study from Child's Health showed that the kids who watch TV have 55 percent higher risk of becoming overwight than those who do not watch TV. Also, what is worse is that children often times get to eat a lot when they are engrossed in something since they cannot divide their attention to their eating at the same time; especially interesting programs like cartoon is played on TV. Although TV might be entertaining and informative sometimes, watching TV is such an unhealthy activity for youth, considering the above factors.

In conclusion, there is no doubt that children are adversely affected by television. It is undeniable that in the era of technology, TV plays a pivotal role in men's lives. Yet, contents of TV has negative impact on kids and watching activity keeps kids away from good health. There is a need to rescure children from the danger of TV, before it is too late.
